Thirty years ago, the National Charter Schools Institute was born in response to a simple, powerful question: What if every student, regardless of their zip code, had access to a great education led by people who were truly empowered to lead?
We saw a pressing need; the number of charter schools was growing nationwide, but leaders, authorizers, and boards did not have the support, structure, or systems to sustain and scale excellence. The Institute stepped in to fill that gap and ensure leaders had the tools to succeed and win for kids.
Today, the Institute is active in 27 states plus DC and Guam , impacting hundreds of authorizers and 3900+ schools, ultimately shaping the educational journeys of over 1.5 million students. From coast to coast, we empower school leaders, equip boards, elevate authorizers, and support management organizations with tools, insights, and strategies that make a measurable difference in school communities.

Since 1999, SUNY has shaped a powerful vision: to create and sustain schools that deliver for kids; schools where expectations are high, learning is deep, and every student has the opportunity to thrive. But this isn’t just about opening schools. It’s about what happens inside them.
Today, SUNY oversees more than 200 charter schools across the State of New York, collectively serving over 100,000 students. These schools aren’t just open, they’re achieving. In recent state assessments, the vast majority outperformed their local districts in both math and English language arts. Behind these results is something deeper: a belief that setting a high bar, offering real support, and holding true to your mission leads to transformational change.

Every SUNY-authorized school commits to a clear, measurable roadmap for student success. These Accountability Plans, customized for each school, ensure that goals are not only set—they’re pursued with focus, care, and purpose.
