Redesigning the Path from Classroom to Career
Future Ready: Classroom to Career is a three-year national effort to scale workforce-driven, academically rigorous charter school models that prepare students for what comes next, whether that path leads to college, careers, or both.
Across the country, students are graduating into a rapidly changing economy while millions of well-paying jobs remain unfilled. At the same time, families and employers are calling for education systems that offer more clear and relevant pathways to opportunity. Future Ready exists to close this gap by transforming how schools are designed, authorized, and scaled.
This work goes beyond isolated programs or pilots. It codifies what works, builds practical tools for the field, and activates cross-sector partnerships so more students graduate with real skills, real options, and real momentum into adulthood.
Preparing Students for Success
Educators, families, employers, and policymakers are asking the same urgent question: How do we ensure students leave high school truly prepared for life after graduation? Future Ready: Classroom to Career is here to help solve this.
Future Ready: Classroom to Career is structured as a three-year arc—moving from learning and co-design, to tool-building and dissemination, to large-scale adoption and systems change. Through this national effort, we are:
- Identifying and documenting high-performing workforce-driven charter schools
- Building field-tested tools for schools and authorizers
- Creating open-access resources that make high-quality replication possible
- Aligning education systems with real labor market needs
Our goal is simple yet ambitious:
Make career-connected learning a standard expectation—not a special initiative.
Focus: State pilots, landscape analysis, and co-design.
In year one, we are learning deeply from the field and building alongside state and local leaders.
Key activities include:
- State Leadership Council: Quarterly convenings with leaders from six states to co-develop tools for schools and authorizers.
- Field Labs & Convenings: Regional, in-person site visits to exemplary workforce-driven schools, engaging employers, and families.
- National Landscape Study: Identifying 20–30 high-performing workforce-driven schools nationwide, with deeper case studies of 4–5 models.
- Family & Employer Voice: Surveys and listening sessions with families and employers (750+ responses) to inform design.
- Early Tool Development: Drafting replication readiness rubrics, pathway quality review protocols, family-facing dashboards, and a video guidebook.
Why it matters: Year one ensures this work is grounded in real practice, real community needs, and proven models—creating a strong foundation for national scale.
Focus: Tool development, expanded engagement, and national dissemination.
In year two, learning becomes action.
Key activities include:
- Finalizing core deliverables, including:
- Replication Readiness Rubric
- Implementation toolkits
- Workforce-aligned performance measures
- Family-facing dashboards
- National Best Practices Guidebook
- Multi-part video guidebook
- Digital Hub: Launching a mobile-friendly, open-access platform with multilingual resources.
- National Dissemination: Sharing tools through convenings, webinars, and major national conferences.
- Network Expansion: Engaging 20+ additional authorizers and schools across new states.
- Ongoing Community Engagement: Quarterly convenings to ensure tools remain grounded in lived experience and responsive to regional labor markets.
Why it matters: Year two lowers barriers to adoption by turning proven ideas into usable, scalable resources for schools and authorizers nationwide.
Focus: Replication support, field activation, and systems-level influence.
In year three, the work shifts from adoption to permanence.
Key activities include:
- Replication & Policy Conditions Map: A national guide to creating supportive environments for workforce-driven schools.
- Technical Assistance: Direct support for authorizers and states adapting accountability frameworks, applications, and funding structures.
- Community Activation: Partnering with families and employers to vet tools, expand outreach, and strengthen trust.
- Ongoing Learning: Sustaining a national community of practice through trainings and evaluation briefs.
- Future Ready by Design Summit: A culminating national convening to showcase models, celebrate progress, and inspire continued replication.
Why it matters: Year three ensures workforce-driven models are embedded in policy, authorizing practice, and school replication efforts—creating lasting change.
Future Ready: Classroom to Career will produce a practical, open-access suite of tools and resources, including:
- Replication Readiness Rubric
- Career Pathway Quality Review Protocol

- Workforce-aligned performance measures
- Family-facing dashboards
- National Best Practices Guidebook
- Multi-part video guidebook
- A multilingual, open-access digital hub
All resources are designed to be usable, adaptable, and grounded in real-world conditions.
6 States Leading the Way
This work begins in, and is shaped by, six leadership states: Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Florida, Idaho, and Colorado
Across these states, we are elevating local innovation, strengthening cross-sector partnerships, and highlighting what is already working—so others can learn, adapt, and replicate.
Together, these states serve as national beacons, demonstrating what’s possible when education and workforce systems align.
