2018 Charter Schools Essay Contest
All students have heroes. In this year’s Michigan Charter Schools Essay Contest, we’re asking middle school and high school students to tell us who their heroes are and why. Is it an inspirational teacher? A courageous parent? Or maybe a faithful friend? Whoever they are, their inspiring stories need to be shared!
We want to celebrate these heroes who have had such a great impact on the lives of our kids, as well as recognize the great teachers who prepare them to succeed in life and become heroes themselves. To celebrate National School Choice Week—and how Michigan’s charter schools are getting kids ready for the future—the National Charter Schools Institute is proud to sponsor the 2018 Michigan Charter Schools Essay Contest.
The contest is open to students in middle school and high school. We invite each student to tell us who their heroes are and the impacts they have had. Be creative! Tell us what makes them a great hero for you and what parts of their character you’d like to have in your own life.
Entries are being accepted until March 30, 2018, and will be reviewed by a panel of qualified judges. Winners will be announced during National Charter Schools Week in May but notified prior. Prizes will be awarded for the first, second, and third place winners in middle school (6-8) and high school (9-12) divisions.

Contest Rules
The 2018 Theme: “Who’s your hero?”
Suggested Word Count:
Grades 6-8: Between 250 and 400 words.
Grades 9-12: Between 450 and 550 words.
Who Can Enter: The essay contest is open to all middle school and high school students in Michigan charter schools.
How to Enter: Students interested in entering the contest must submit their essay to the Institute:

All submissions must include: The student’s name and grade, the teacher’s name, the school’s name, and either a school or parent telephone number or email address to contact the winners. All submissions must be typewritten or legibly handwritten. Only one entry per student, please.
Entering the contest grants the Institute permission to publish essays in whole or in part, and use winners’ names and photographs to publicize winning entries.
The deadline for submission is Friday, March 30, 2018. Winning entries will be announced during National Charter Schools Week in May, but notified prior.
Judging Criteria: Entries will be reviewed by a panel of qualified judges. Winners will be selected based on the originality of their theme (be creative and compelling); how clearly the theme is expressed; and adherence to rules of grammar, punctuation, and style. The word count will be noted, but not strictly adhered to.
