“You’re my hero, because...”

“A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.” - Hercules

During this years art contest we've recieved over 1,000 pieces of artwork from K-5 charter schools students in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. We have been inspired by so many amazing people that our students see as heroes in their lives. Everyone did incredible and were so grateful to all of our participants.

Hero: Dr. Cetin, ESL teacher

This submission truly embodies the spirit of heroism! In the photo, you will see two students who are presenting portraits to and OF their hero, Dr. Cetin. Dr. Cetin until recently, taught ESL to these two 4th grade students, Veronica (taller student on left,) and Jazmin (on the right.) When we learned the theme of this year's Art competition, we began practicing portraits in Art class and both Veronica and Jazmin worked for weeks to complete their portraits of Dr. Cetin, because each of them wanted him to know that they were supporting him through his battle against cancer. When the portraits were complete, we attached them to the front of large sheets of paper (18"x24") to create a booklet that our Elementary students could sign. The girls then accompanied Mr. Fatih Sumer, our Principal and myself, (Ms. Vien,) to Dr. Cetin's house to deliver their gifts - and this photo captures that moment! When I spoke to the girls about what made Dr. Cetin a hero in their eyes, they said, "He is strong and brave...and even though he is facing this illness and has so much to think about, he is still patient and kind." Here at Horizon Science Academy Lorain, we are all inspired by Dr. Cetin's courage and kindness and he truly is a hero to us all.
