Bold By Choice Podcast | S3 E1: Schools That Reflect the World | Overview
In partnership with the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition
Overview
What if more schools were intentionally built to look like the world our students are growing into. What if diversity, belonging, and academic excellence served as the foundation of school design rather than separate goals that rarely meet.
That vision is at the heart of the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition (DCSC), and it is the reason we are proud to partner with them to open Season 3 of Bold by Choice.
Our first episode features a powerful conversation with Sonia Park, Executive Director of DCSC, and Ashley Heard, Development and External Affairs Lead. Together, they support a national network of more than 280 intentionally diverse charter schools, serving over 120,000 students across 26 states and Washington, DC.
Why This Conversation Matters
Sonia and Ashley remind us of something often missing in broader conversations about public education. Students need strong academics, but they also need environments where they feel seen, valued, and connected. Their reflections make it clear that intentionally diverse schools do not happen by chance. They are built through purposeful design and a deep conviction that schools can be places where every child has genuine belonging and access to high levels of learning.
Both leaders shared personal experiences that shape their commitment to this work. Those stories underscore a central truth. Diversity is not accidental, and excellence is not accidental. Both require thoughtful design, clear purpose, and leaders willing to challenge the status quo.
Inside the Coalition’s Work
The coalition’s impact can be felt in school communities across the country. DCSC has grown a national network where leaders collaborate, learn from one another, and openly share what works. They invest in leadership development, support emerging founders, and cultivate communities of practice where real problem solving happens.
Their newest initiative, the High Quality Intentionally Diverse Schools framework, brings clarity to the principles and conditions that help intentionally diverse schools excel. It codifies practices that create strong school culture, academic strength, and inclusive community design. The framework not only supports current DCSC schools but also serves as a guide for others who want to build or strengthen intentionally diverse programs.
A Look Ahead
Season 3 will highlight several DCSC member schools that are redefining what public education can be. Listeners will visit Montessori classrooms in St. Louis, STEM models in Utah, International Baccalaureate programs in Brooklyn, and other learning environments where belonging and achievement work in harmony.
Episode 1 sets the tone for the season. The conversation is honest, human centered, and rooted in purpose. Sonia and Ashley remind us that advancing this work requires courage, clarity, and a commitment to students that does not waver.
