Bold By Choice Podcast | S3 E4: Hear from Steven Palmer

Human First, Excellent Always

A reflection from Steven Palmer

When I think about the work we do at Valor Collegiate Academies, I always come back to a simple belief. Students are human first, and they deserve schools that honor their full humanity while holding them to the highest expectations. Joining the Bold By Choice Podcast gave me the chance to reflect on how that belief shows up in our community every day.

Valor was founded on a question that continues to guide us. What would it look like to build a school where rigorous academics, deep social and emotional support, and an intentionally diverse community are not separate initiatives but part of one coherent design. That question led to the Compass, our model of comprehensive human development. It is how we support students in mind, body, and spirit, and it shapes the systems and culture that define our school.

The Compass comes to life in ways that are both structured and deeply human. Each week, students and teachers sit in circles where they share their stories and build connections that strengthen the fabric of our community. Throughout the day, students engage in repair work that helps them navigate conflict with honesty and care. Classrooms are places where belonging, feedback, and high expectations work together, not against one another. This is not about making school fun in a superficial way. It is about loving students and pairing that love with the technical craft of excellent teaching.

Our commitment to whole child development is matched by an equally strong commitment to academic excellence. We analyze data regularly, coach every teacher and leader each week, and maintain consistent practices that allow us to respond quickly when students need something different. These systems make sure that learning is real, that growth is visible, and that every student has a path toward success. That is why Valor is consistently among the top performing and top growing schools in Tennessee. Families see the difference, and they choose us again and again.

Yet the most meaningful evidence is always found in the stories. I think of a student who used to tear up exit tickets out of frustration and who later walked across the stage having completed advanced math and ready for a trade program that excited him. I think of a fifth grader who struggled to trust school and who recently wrote on a whiteboard, “I think I am starting to love this school again.” Moments like these remind me of something I learned early in my career. Every child wants to learn. Every child wants to belong. When we get the conditions right, students show us what they are capable of.

One of my mentors once told me to love the kids and that the rest could be taught later. That has stayed with me for my entire career. At Valor, love is not an idea. It is practiced through structure, coaching, clarity, and a relentless commitment to students and families. It is the force that holds joy and rigor together. It is what makes healing possible for students who come to us not yet believing that school can be a place for them.I am grateful to the Bold By Choice Podcast team and to the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition for creating space to share Valor’s story. My hope is that our experience shows educators and leaders what is possible. We do not have to choose between high expectations and mental health, or between diversity and achievement. With intentional design and a team grounded in care, schools can truly be human first and excellent always.
