Bold By Choice Podcast | S3 E2: Beyond College Prep | Overview
In partnership with the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition
Overview
What becomes possible when schools are intentionally designed to bring communities together rather than keep them apart?
In Season 3, Episode 2 of the Bold By Choice Podcast, we travel to Rhode Island to explore that question with Sarah Anderson, CEO and Superintendent of Blackstone Valley Prep. Serving students from four neighboring but historically segregated communities, Blackstone Valley Prep is proving that integration, rigor, and belonging are not competing priorities. They are mutually reinforcing by design.
Blackstone Valley Prep was founded on a simple but bold idea. Zip codes should not determine opportunity. By removing district boundaries and intentionally enrolling students from urban and suburban communities, BVP created a public charter network where diversity is not incidental. It is foundational. Today, across six campuses from elementary through high school, students experience strong academics, diverse learning environments, and a college going culture that begins early and stays personal.
Throughout the episode, Sarah shares what excellence looks like in practice. It shows up in classrooms where every student is engaged, teachers collaborate deeply, and lessons are continuously improved based on real feedback. It shows up in a team teaching model that allows adults to respond quickly to student needs rather than wait for year end results. It shows up in a culture where iteration is expected, learning is shared, and growth is collective.
Families notice. Demand for Blackstone Valley Prep far exceeds available seats, not only because of strong academic outcomes, but because students are known, supported, and challenged. More than eighty percent of graduates are first generation college students, and one hundred percent leave with a postsecondary plan. Increasingly, the network is expanding its vision beyond college alone to ensure students are prepared for meaningful careers and full lives.
At its core, this conversation is about leadership. Sarah reflects on how her own journey as a teacher shaped her belief that systemic change happens through specific students, specific educators, and specific moments. That belief now guides a network committed to continuous improvement, professional trust, and expanding the circle of success for more children.
This episode is a reminder that great schools do not happen by accident. They are intentionally designed, continuously refined, and grounded in the belief that every student is worth the work.
